Is cord-cutting worth it? What are some of the basics involved in moving off regular cable TV service? Can you really save money?
I work in the cable television industry, have for many years. So I’ve heard from customers, VPs of programming, CEOs, and other MSO operators in the industry about cable TV and all it’s woes since starting 25 years ago.
I do not live in the “coverage area” of the company I work for, so I have to use the cable TV services of another provider. Currently they are doing business as Comcast or Xfinity. While the actual service is alright, the billing and service options are horrible. Prices increase and “fees”are broken out of the bill causing the monthly bill to rise every year. This is not a Comcast issue as my company does pretty much the same thing.
Further, as content providers grapple with getting as many dollars for the mediocre programming as they can, the perceived value of regular cable TV diminishes each year leading to more and more consumers opting to “cut the cord” and seek a different more affordable way to enjoy television. I am one of them. I’m hoping I can lend a little different perspective to cord-cutting by sharing my experience with others.
There are many options available depending on what you want or need. Some wish to save money, for others the savings are just a bonus, it is easily possible to spend more money when cord-cutting. The cheapest way overall is just putting up a terrestrial Over The Air (OTA) antenna and wire it to the televisions. This only provides the local TV stations in your area. Next would be getting a high speed Internet connection to augment options and get channels that are normally offered on cable. While I would love to go into all the options available I will just focus on what we have done as a household.
